When your design is too perfect

Ever have one of those days when you draft a design so flawless that you can’t help but second-guess it? Just last week, I put together a roadway layout that met all the standards, but I caught myself thinking about how it might be too ‘by the book’! It’s funny how the more compliant you get, the more you worry about missing the fun side of creativity. Anyone else feel this pressure?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

Totally get that! I recently had a drainage design that was textbook-perfect, but I felt it lacked character. Sometimes adding a quirky element, like a unique plant layout, can make it feel more personal.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌

I’ve been there too! When I designed a park layout last month, I added a playful twist with unexpected seating arrangements and it really brought the space to life. Sometimes, breaking a rule — like a non-linear pathway — can spark creativity. Have you thought about experimenting with the flow in your roadway layout?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

It’s so relatable! I did a parking lot design a while back that was impressively efficient but felt sterile. Maybe for your roadway layout, consider incorporating some creative landscaping or unique traffic calming measures.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌

You know, sometimes incorporating a small, fun feature can really add personality to an otherwise standard design. I once added a series of whimsical benches to a park layout, and it changed the whole vibe! How about considering something similar for that roadway?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌

I totally get what you mean about second-guessing a flawless design! I once added some quirky bike racks to a busy thoroughfare, and it really changed the vibe. Maybe for your next project, consider a small element that stands out, like unique lighting. Have you thought about anything playful to add?

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌

But i totally get it! It drives me nuts when I obsess over making things perfect, like that time I was working on a bridge design for weeks and ended up feeling it was too rigid. Maybe try adding a unique touch, like a bike lane with colorful markings — it could make it stand out without losing compliance.

‌‍‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌

It’s funny how that happens! I once redesigned a crosswalk and ended up adding colorful pavers that really drew attention. Maybe a little twist on your layout could keep the standards while sparking some creativity? @nrobinson89.
